About the Role

We are looking for a hands-on Tech Lead to guide and mentor our Systems Engineers in the Platform Engineering team. While you will collaborate with our Software Engineers, they will function as peers; your primary leadership responsibilities lie with the Systems Engineers. You will champion reliable, scalable, and secure infrastructure solutions, ensuring our platform is a point of leverage for the company’s products.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Strategy

• Lead a team of ~5 Systems Engineers, setting technical direction and driving best practices in AWS-based cloud infrastructure.
• Collaborate with peer Tech Leads (e.g., Software Engineers, Security, etc.) to develop and maintain a cohesive platform strategy.
• Evaluate emerging technologies through a business-centric lens—balancing innovation with practical impact on outcomes, reliability, and ROI.

Cloud Infrastructure Provisioning & Operations (AWS)

• Architect, provision, and maintain cloud-based solutions on AWS, ensuring scalability, security, and cost-effectiveness.
• Oversee infrastructure as code, performance tuning, and resource optimization.

Monitoring, Observability & Incident Response

• Implement and refine comprehensive monitoring and alerting strategies for proactive issue detection.
• Lead incident response, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement of operational processes.

Software Pipelines & Shift-Left Practices

• Design and maintain continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines that facilitate efficient, automated software delivery.
• Embed shift-left practices in testing, security, and compliance to catch issues early in the development lifecycle.

Security, Compliance & Disaster Recovery

• Define and enforce security best practices across the platform, ensuring regulatory and internal compliance requirements are met.
• Lead disaster recovery planning, testing, and execution to minimize downtime.

Team Mentorship & Development

• Provide mentorship, feedback, and coaching to foster professional growth among Systems Engineers.
• Champion knowledge sharing and healthy, respectful debate on technical matters.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Partner effectively with Software Engineers, Product Owners, and other stakeholders to align on goals and deliverables.
• Communicate technical challenges and opportunities clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Required Qualifications

• Extensive Systems Engineering Experience: Proven track record in provisioning and operating AWS cloud infrastructure, implementing monitoring/observability solutions, managing incidents, and designing secure, reliable pipelines.
• Cloud-Native Proficiency: Familiar with the landscape of cloud-native technologies and able to discern when and how to adopt them.
• Shift-Left Mindset: Prior experience embedding testing, security, and compliance practices early in the software development lifecycle.
• Leadership Skills: Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor a small team of Systems Engineers, offering guidance and setting clear goals.
• Professional Communication: Ability to respectfully disagree and seek to understand before being understood. Communicates clearly, values commitments, and acts with integrity.
• Business Outcome Focus: Strong decision-making skills that prioritize practical impact on business goals when considering new tools and architectures.

Expected Impact Timeline

In your first month, you will:

• Get up to speed on our internal platform, AWS infrastructure, processes, and team dynamics.
• Build relationships with Systems Engineers, peer Tech Leads and Staff-plus engineers.

By month 3, you will:

• Actively contribute to planning by identifying infrastructure improvements and collaborating on roadmap initiatives.
• Begin leading technical discussions and offering solutions to optimize performance, monitoring, and automation.

By month 6, you will:

• Own key infrastructure projects end-to-end, ensuring reliability, security, and cost effectiveness.
• Shape long-term technical strategy alongside peer Tech Leads and Staff-plus engineers, influencing broader platform decisions.
• Mentor and develop each Systems Engineer on your team, providing regular feedback and fostering a culture of continuous learning.
